What is the Gospel?

An outline of the basic message of the Bible

I. God

A. God is holy—perfectly good, not a hint of evil

1. Leviticus 19:2

2. Exodus 15:11

3. James 1:13

B. God is loving—kind and generous toward His creation

1. I Chronicles 16:34

2. Psalm 145:8

C. God is just—completely fair

1. Deuteronomy 32:4

D. God is the creator—made all that is out of nothing!

1. Psalm 95:3-5

2. Isaiah 45:12 & 18

II. Creation

A. "It is good."—from a good and perfect God comes a good and perfect world

B. Four-fold harmony—God and people, people and people, people and environment, people and selves (Genesis 1&2)

C. Special place of humans—we are His image, vice-regents ruling creation under God (Genesis 1:28 & 2:15)

D. Transition: This ain't today's world! What happened?

III. Fall (sin)

A. A test of obedience—would people obey this good and fair God no matter what? No, they wouldn't.

1. Genesis 2:16-17

2. Genesis 3

B. What is sin?—autonomy/rebellion

C. Repercussions

1. All mankind "infected" by Adam's sin (Romans 5:12 & Genesis 6:5-6 & 11-12)

2. Kingdom of Darkness enters in

3. Sin becomes the human condition (Romans 3:10-12, Mark 7:20-23)

4. Four-fold harmony broken (Romans 8:19-22)

5. Death comes to all people, physically and spiritually (Romans 6:23a & Ephesians 2:1ff)

D. Transition: God has a "dilemma"; His holiness and justice demand death/destruction for all mankind, His love desires our life & good. No hope for mankind at this point, unless God intervenes.

IV. Redemption/Renewal

A. Focal point: Jesus, the God-man

1. His life redeems (temptation, announcing the Kingdom, miracles)

2. His death redeems (substitute for us, took our penalty on Him)

a. Matthew 27

b. John 3:16-18 & 36

c. Mark 10:45

d. Romans 5:6-8

e. II Corinthians 5:21

f. I Peter 2:22-24

3. Resurrection—the curse is broken! (Matthew 28)

4. Ascension—Jesus rules! His Kingdom is advancing today.

a. Revelation 21:1-8

b. Matthew 25:31-46

c. I Corinthians 15:20-26

d. Romans 8:19-23

V. Our Response—What does God expect of us?

A. Repent ("turn around")

1. be sorry for sin (II Corinthians 7:9-10)

2. acknowledge disobedience, confess (Psalm 51)

3. ask God for forgiveness

4. turn away from evil and toward God

5. leave the evil Kingdom, "defect"

B. Faith (believe and trust)

1. Believe the message that I've just explained to you.

2. Act on that message by trusting that it's for you! (Romans 10:9-10, Acts 16:30b-31)

3. Specifically trust Christ that He can and does pay for your sins and accepts you on that basis.

4. Join God's Kingdom—do you want to trust in Christ and be a part of His Kingdom?
